Healing is possible with Chiang Mai Trauma Therapy

Your Life, Reimagined

At Chiang Mai Trauma Therapy we believe that traumatic events from the past affect people in their everyday lives. People have trouble breaking free of the legacy of these events and often report feeling trapped and hopeless. Our treatment method addresses past traumatic memories and provides relief from PTSD and C-PTSD, including nightmares, flashbacks, intrusive thoughts and unhelpful coping behaviours such as anger, impulsivity, substance use and other addictive disorders. Resolving past traumas can have a positive impact on your physical health, emotional health and improve your ability to have and maintain healthy relationships.

Our treatment method

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS)

Our experience is that traditional talk therapy is not very effective when dealing with the severe effects of trauma and complex trauma. Telling traumatic narratives, especially early on in treatment, and reliving old memories can re-traumatize, rather than heal. As trauma has a physiological effect on the nervous system, simply talking about it is not enough, and can be detrimental.

One of our primary treatment modalities is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR, which has been called "the gentlest and most efficient form of trauma therapy." EMDR is well documented to resolve traumatic memories and relieve PTSD symptoms, without re-traumatization.

Another modality that we utilize in conjunction with EMDR is Internal Family Systems Therapy. IFS is a transformative, evidence-based psychotherapy that helps people heal by accessing and loving their protective and wounded inner parts.

Both of these therapies are recognized as evidence-based by the National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices.

Learn about trauma and collaborate with your therapist on a treatment plan for you

Many people do not know what trauma is, or the multitude of ways that it can affect your life on a day to day basis. Learn the science of trauma and see how it may be impacting your physical, mental and emotional health as well as your relationships.

Assessments including bio-psycho-social,  ACE (adverse childhood experiences), Post Traumatic Stress Index and the Dissociative Experiences Scale will allow us to become familiar with the clinical landscape of your case. Then in collaboration with you we will design a treatment plan designed to help you resolve your traumas and learn healthier, adaptive coping skills, in the most efficient way possible.

About us

Mike Miller, CAT, CCTP - Founder

Mike is a Certified Addiction Therapist, Certified Clinical Trauma  Professional and IFS Informed Therapist.  In 2013, having worked in the field of addiction treatment for over a decade Mike attended EMDR training in Hong Kong and thereafter shifted his focus to treating the trauma which was underpinning addiction. Seeing better outcomes for his clients he became convinced that this was the path that he wanted to pursue, leading him to complete several advanced EMDR and IFS training programmes.

During the pandemic in early 2020, Mike became aware that many people were struggling, their past trauma triggered in the present by a lack of safety, financial insecurity, isolation and uncertainty about the future. These struggles surfaced as addictive disorders, irritability, relationship problems, anxiety and depression. People did not know how to break free of the legacy of their traumatic past.  At that time Mike launched Chiang Mai Trauma Therapy with the intention of helping people heal and transform their lives.

Chiang Mai Trauma Therapy also collaborates with several very experienced, international therapists who can address any presenting issue you may be struggling with.

Addiction Counselling

Addiction, it seems like it is everywhere. Almost everyone has a story or knows someone affected by this issue. So why don't people know how to get out of it? One problem is the lack of reliable information combined with the vast amount of misinformation out there. However, we do know what addiction is, how it works and  the science behind it. This is what makes it possible to treat it. It is predictable, which means that we can predict how it responds to evidence based treatments. We also know how it responds without treatment, or with treatment methods that are not reliable.

At Chiang Mai Trauma Therapy, our therapists have many years of experience in the treatment of addictive disorders, including designing and implementing both outpatient and residential treatment programs,  so we know what works and what doesn't. We use only evidence-based therapies, without judgement for people struggling with addiction issues.

 Client Testimonials:

The level of compassion and insight into the nature of trauma and healing that I found at Chiang Mai Trauma Therapy, together with a range of tools including CBT, EMDR, IFS and Narrative Therapy has helped me back to Self in ways that I had no idea were possible.

“Being traumatized means continuing to organize your life as if the trauma were still going on—unchanged and immutable—as every new encounter or event is contaminated by the past.”
